The Meaning of the Advent Wreath

Because of the interesting set of circumstances in which we find ourselves this advent season, we thought it would be nice to give families the chance to celebrate at home with the ones you love most!

In the kits that you received from the Church, you will find the following:
-1 two foot strand of garland
-1 six inch wide foam ring
-3 purple taper candles
-1 pink taper candle
*A Christ candle is NOT included in the kit!  Read on to see why!*

The first Sunday of Advent this year is November 29th!  On this day gather your family together and choose one of the purple candles to act as the Prophet's Candle.  This is the candle that symbolizes hope as it represents the prophets of the Old Testament, particularly Isaiah, that waited in hope for the arrival of the Messiah! Read the following devotion together as a family after you light the 'Hope' Candle!  Take turns reading different parts so everyone can have a chance to participate in the celebration!

The second Sunday of Advent is on December 6th, and our candle for today is called Bethlehem's Candle which represents love!  Choose another of the purple candles and light it in remembrance of the love that Mary and Joseph had for their son born in Bethlehem.  Light the 'Love' Candle and read the following devotion together as a family!

The third Sunday of Advent is on December 13th!  Find the pink candle from your kit.  This is the Shepherd's Candle, more commonly known as the 'Joy' Candle (the color rose represents joy!).  To the shepherd’s great joy, the angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them, too.  Celebrate as the Shepherd's did, and light the candle and read the devotion below with your families!

The fourth Sunday of Advent this year is December 20th!  Today we light the final purple candle, the Angel's Candle, which represents peace.  The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace--He came to bring people close to God and to each other again.  Thank God for the peace he brings us everyday, and read over the devotion below with your families as you light the 'Peace' Candle.

On the final day, Christmas Day, we light the Christ Candle.  We have not included the final Christ Candle in the kit, because we want you to make this a little more personal!  Choose a candle from your home to act as the Christ Candle for your wreath!  Place it in the center of the wreath, light in on Christmas day, and repeat the devotion below as a family.
